Mission Statement
The mission of the Blauvelt Free Library is to foster a vibrant, inclusive, community centered environment which provides access to knowledge, resources, programs and opportunities that inspire lifelong learning, creativity, and connection for all. Emphasis is placed on the library’s role in community engagement, personal growth, and access to resources for everyone. It reflects a broad, forward-thinking, and inclusive commitment to service.
The vision of the Blauvelt Free Library is to fulfill its mission by actively listening to its patrons and continuously adapting to meet their evolving needs and interests.
5 Year Plan of Service 2025-2030
Provide in-demand materials, resources, and services
- Access to Current, Inclusive Materials: Ensure patrons have access to a diverse selection of up-to-date materials in both print and digital formats, as well as local cultural centers and museums which reflect the needs and interests of the community
- Assistive Programs and Devices: Offer specialized services such as translation assistance, Braille, large print formats, and home delivery to support patrons with various accessibility needs
- Logical Organization of Resources: Present library materials both in physical and electronic formats in an intuitive, user-friendly way to enhance accessibility, encourage usage, and improve patron satisfaction
- Copying and Faxing Services: Provide access to copy machines and fax services to meet the practical needs of library patrons
- Notary Services: Offer professional notary services to assist patrons with document authentication
- IT Assistance: Provide support for patrons in navigating technology, troubleshooting devices, and utilizing library digital resources effectively
Provide up to date technology for patron use
- Public Access Computers: Maintain a sufficient number of public-use computers equipped with the latest software and operating systems to support diverse patron needs
- ADA-Compliant Library Website: Ensure the library’s website is fully ADA-compliant, offering accessible and user-friendly navigation for patrons to access library information, available resources, and upcoming events. Includes easy program registration options for library programs
- On-Site IT Specialist: Continue to employ an on-site IT specialist to monitor internal systems, ensure smooth operations, and assist patrons with technology-related queries and issues
- Wireless Network and Printing: Continue to provide secure wireless networking and printing to patrons in the library
Provide outstanding customer service
- Library Accessibility: Offer access to the library 7 days a week (excluding Summer Sundays) to accommodate a variety of patron schedules and needs and 24 hour easy access book return drop- off
- Staff Training: Ensure all library staff receive proper and ongoing training to effectively address and meet the diverse needs of patrons, providing excellent customer service and support
- Adequate Staffing: Maintain sufficient staffing levels during operating hours to ensure efficient service and a welcoming environment for all patrons
- Monthly Book Recommendations: Provide curated book recommendations each month to engage patrons, introduce them to new materials, and foster a love for reading
- Provide a Functional and Welcoming Space: Continue to offer library meeting spaces that are accessible, well-maintained, and available for programs, activities, and community use in accordance with established library policies.
- Encourage Community Feedback: periodically provide surveys and program evaluations to gauge public response to current efforts and plan for future events and objectives
Inform and communicate effectively with the community
- Print Newsletters: Mailed three times per year to all Blauvelt residents, these newsletters provide comprehensive updates on available library services, hours of operation, upcoming programs, and ongoing or future projects
- Weekly E-mail Blasts: Sent every Sunday to registered patrons, these emails highlight the upcoming week’s activities and programs, ensuring timely awareness and engagement
- Social Media Engagement: The library maintains an active presence on social media platforms, regularly sharing updates, event reminders, and news to keep the community informed and connected
- Monthly Event Calendar: A printed calendar of events is prominently displayed within the library, with an electronic version also accessible via the library’s website for convenient online viewing
Provide programming that will address and enrich the needs and interests of the community
- Diverse Program Scheduling: Offer a broad range of programs both in-person and virtually, scheduled during daytime and evening hours to accommodate the varied availability of community members
- Expanded Adult Education: Increase the number and variety of adult education programs focusing on topics such as health, technology, art, and cooking. These offerings are regularly evaluated and adjusted to reflect the evolving interests and needs of the community
- Expert-Led Programming: Continue to build and maintain a network of knowledgeable and engaging program providers who contribute their expertise to enhance the patron experience
- Enriched Children’s Programming: Develop and promote educational programs for children that support learning, creativity, emotional well-being, and curiosity, fostering a lifelong love of discovery
- Inclusive Teen Engagement: Expand programming for teens that encourages learning, creative expression, wellness, community service, and—most importantly—a strong sense of belonging and participation within the community
Build community alliances that produce beneficial partnerships
- Ongoing School District Collaboration: Continue working closely with South Orangetown Central School District (SOCSD) libraries to share ideas, coordinate joint programs, and create initiatives that maximize resources while expanding services for the community
- Early Learning Partnerships: Maintain and strengthen relationships with early childhood educators to introduce young children and their families to the library, fostering early literacy and a positive connection with learning
- New Community Partnerships: Actively seek and cultivate new partnerships with local agencies, organizations, and cooperatives to bring dynamic, diverse opportunities to patrons of all ages
- Friends of the Library Development: Enhance and grow a strong Friends of the Library group to help support the library’s mission, advocate for its services, and contribute to programming, fundraising, and community outreach efforts
Preserving the History of Blauvelt
- Preserve and Promote Local History: The library will continue to celebrate and preserve the identity and heritage of Blauvelt and the surrounding area by displaying and making accessible local artifacts, photographs, and publications, as well as supporting the efforts of local historical societies.
