It’s estimated that children lose up to 20 percent of their knowledge from the previous year at school during the off months in a phenomena known as ‘Summer Learning Loss.’ The library is a powerful tool to combat this trend that would otherwise lead to a net loss of 2 years of education between kindergarten and high school.

Each summer, the Blauvelt Free Library’s summer learning program gives parents and children the tools to keep their brain engaged and stimulated all summer long. Children keep a log of the books they’ve read, earn prizes for reading, and attend programs that celebrate their progress and success. Each year has its own theme with is strengthened with ‘feelies’ like posters, bookmarks, custom reading logs, stickers, and more.

In addition, the Mighty 5 Libraries of South Orangetown band together each summer to put together the “Big Brochure” which lists all of the summer programs available from each library. The brochure is available at the front desk, or digitally on the front page of our website. Come join us for a summer of fun and fiction!
